Mebendazole and its properties

The active ingredient in all VERMOX® worm treatment products is mebendazole 100 mg. Mebendazole is an effective and well-tolerated threadworm medication, with studies showing high cure rates of 90% to 100% with a single 100 mg dose. A repeat dose in 2 to 3 weeks is often recommended to ensure the infection is completely eradicated.^

Mebendazole is also an effective treatment for other intestinal worm infections, including roundworm, whipworm, and hookworm. The recommended dosage of mebendazole for these particular infections is different to the dosage for threadworm infections. These types of worms occur much less frequently in Australia than threadworms, so it’s important to talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you think you might have a roundworm, whipworm, or hookworm infection.

For all types of intestinal worms, mebendazole works in the same way to kill the worms. Mebendazole binds to a protein in the parasitic worms called beta tubulin and stops this protein working properly. This prevents the worms from absorbing a sugar called glucose, which they need to give them energy. After a few days without glucose, the worms don’t have enough energy to survive and so they die.
